I get what you mean but if you were born in Puerto Rico, you’re born an American citizen. Which makes them American. Puerto Ricans need a US passport to travel outside of the US, and they use US currency.

It’s sort of like American-born Mexicans saying they are Mexican but can also say they’re Americans.

I mean unless you’re Native American, everyone else here has origins from some other country.
