it was the easiest path for Beterbiev. He always wanted to unify and then either retire or try and get a gold medal by fighting again in the Olympics if it was possible.

Explain how a 39 year old is all of a sudden a good matchup when for years we kept hearing how +35 year olds are past it, old, retirement bound. Just last year we kept hearing and are still hearing how fighting a 40 year old was the most terrible matchup ever. Is there going to be a huge gap between a 39 1/2 year old vs a 40 year old? Am I missing something?

That excuse wasn't good enough when Adonis Stevenson went to showtime for more money instead of fighting Kovalev.
The money angle is always good enough for me. In that instance, what wasn’t good enough for me was team Kovalev petitioning the WBC for a mandatory for Stevenson’s belt, getting it and then refusing to take part in the purse bid.
