He did try. I'm not going to say he was trying the right things, but he was trying.

The thing is, anyone who has ever actually boxed or even sparred will know the feeling Prograis was experiencing in there, when your opponent is two steps ahead of every thing you do and it feels like they know what move you're going to make before you do. There's nothing more demoralising than punching air and getting punished every time you do. Haney did a great job at this.

In my opinion, Regis's corner let him down a bit with their (lack of) advice. After 4-5 rounds he desperately needed to change the complexion of the fight in whatever way possible. I think they should have been imploring him to:
    • Get closer with your feet before letting anything go. This was his number one issue in my opinion.
    • Stop throwing that bulls**t jab. It's a foot short every time and it does nothing. Double or triple it up to close the distance, sure, but stop throwing it to land because it isn't going to.
    • Stop reaching with the left hand to the body.
    • Stop loading up and looking for that one fight-changing shot and start touching him with something, anything, doesn't have to be hard.
Prograis is clearly a heavy-handed puncher, just him landing something on Haney's body/arms/shoulders/chest would have helped to sap his energy for later in the fight while opening up many more punching opportunities along the way. He never stopped trying, he just needed to change up what he was trying.
