Yeah. Fighters train to defend against clinching and holding. One-hundred percent. But like everything, it's a skill and some are better than others. It's also really hard to defend against a hug or clinch because there's actually a skill set in hugging and clinching. Just as you have to train to defend against it, you have to train to use it.
I've said this before: Haney is the only man I have ever seen in all my years watching this sport who actually trains to slip a punch and counter with a hug. He literally does that. I have yet to get a good explanation from someone justifying why you would slip a punch and counter with a hug when you can counter with a punch. As far as I'm concerned, I never will.Comment

Carlos Molina would do that too, I am so glad he didn't last as a top boxer his entire style was to get close push, land a few pity pat punches, and hold until the break. I have no idea why he wasn't penalized for all of that pushing and holding.

On the other hand Alfredo Angulo in his prime was really really good at avoiding being clenched, he had an ability to get out of it and use a free hand.
Seems like Haney like to use his speed, land a few, clench to waste the clock, and rinse/repeat so his opponent doesn't land on him.Comment

Btw, if you want to avoid the clinch, there's a couple ways, such as tucking your arms in to avoid any underhooks. Undercooks prevent you from being able to land any punches and are hard to get out of. Easer to tuck in and flex out and punch. Also, taking angles really helps to prevent that crap. Aside from that, there's a lot of little tricks you can use, such as leveraging with your head.
Molino Jr. lol yeah... he was bad.Comment

Alot of fighters don't know how or seem to try, Regis has to know this is going to happen and being the bigger man with the power its his own fault if he allows himself to get jabbed and grabbed for 12 rds to a decision loss.
