  • Boxing fans should petition the IBF

It seems to be widely expected the IBF will call their mandatory at heavyweight following Fury - Usyk. As it is understood there is a rematch clause in the Fury - Usyk contract the title is expected to become vacant. This is unsatisfactory for a number of reasons.

Boxing fans should petition the IBF and request that for the good of boxing and its most important division, the Fury - Usyk winner should be given a reasonable time frame to organise a rematch and then commit to fighting their IBF mandatory.

To those who don't wish to see Anthony Joshua given the opportunity to fight for a vacant belt, there is surely an added motivation here.

Could it work? Maybe some media would get on board and the IBF would cave to fan pressure.

The IBF always have really crappy mandatories. I like that they actually follow their rules but they often serve up absolute sh*** as mandatories for champions.

The IBF served Hopkins some pretty crappy mandatories during his reign. I'm a bit shaky working from memory which of his fights pre-Trinidad were mandatories but post-Trinidad they gave him Carl Daniels and Robert Allen. He'd already beaten Allen a few years back. They then proceeded to strip Taylor between him beating Hopkins and their rematch.

I remember that, and was wondering why Taylor wasn't undisputed shortly after the win even if it didn't matter since he was the real MW champion regardless.

The real question is, why hasn't the IBF e-mailed me my title yet? I have alot of posts on the number 1 boxing site in the world.

Nope, it's a bad precedence. We should petition the ABC to make a route for unifications to take priority over mandatories period rather than ask for an exception for this fight or these fighters.

Just trying to play the role of an IBF advocate for argument's sake with the next statement:

Given Usyk and Fury knew about the mando date and knew an immediate rematch clause clashed with the mando date and decided against a rematch clause that allowed for the IBF mandatory to take place between the first Fury-Usyk and the rematch anyway, why shouldn't the IBF see this as disrespectful to their title and its integrity?

I don't really see what would motivate them. Especially since their entire reason for existing is because the WB brands are superfluous with their rulings and regulations.

To be very direct I think to the argument "It would be good for boxing" the IBF's natural stance would be "A sanctioning body that actually follows their own rules is good for boxing".

You're asking a brand that's known for sticking to their regulations to break their regulations because their champion did not respect their regulations enough to schedule around it. Just to be super-extra clear.

To be honest, I don't personally know which side I agree more with. The whole idea of sanctioning bodies and ratings and mandos is so boxing's an even playing field for athletes and isn't solely controlled by money generators. A guy like Ali can lose to a guy like Holmes ONLY because sanctioning bodies existed, that's the ****in' truth. So a body standing up for that sort of stuff, taking a pay cut and ****, to stay true to their rulings is good for boxing.

But also the top guys fighting for all the marbles is definitely good for boxing.

The only real solution I can see is getting the bodies together and making them hash out unification like they had done mandatories in the beginning of body history. Make a new ruling rather than exception, imo.

Robert Allen got 3 shots too I believe. Fury-Chisora 3 level pointless.

No.They can have their rematch, but they shouldn`t be allowed to put the whole division on holt because of that. Hrgovic, Zhang and others have careers too.

I think the rematch clause is the issue here. They hold up the belts. It's just a get back clause for the loser.
