  • Comments Thread For: De La Hoya Blasts IBF for Stripping Title from Terence Crawford

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya was incensed by the latest administrative fiat in boxing. The head of Golden Boy Promotions lashed out at the International Boxing Federation, one of four major sanctioning bodies in the sport, for deciding to strip undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford of his IBF belt earlier this week.

Was expecting more but Oscar is right. Crawford just won it and the guy he beat for it activated a pointless rematch not even giving him time to negotiate (even though he's gonna move up)

Lmao hilarious though cause they had no problem with spencerina dodging him and add to the fact he would say the belts are pointless and steal money

These sanctioning bodies are a joke. They are killing their own product.

It’s not even that it’s bullshyt that he got stripped. It’s more rhat it’s arbitrary who these title organizations choose to strip who they let hold titles hostage. You have guys on long hiatuses, guys facing opponents that aren’t even from the weight class where they’re champion and never get stripped. Crawford won the belt barely over 3 months ago and has been stripped.

Meh. Oscar is just trying to put over his product, which proudly featured MMA fighters over boxers for years. He has no credibility in this matter.

Crawford, contractually obligated to honor Errol's rematch, which is in the dam contract. So How the hell can Crawford defend the IBF title when he's contractually obligated ???

Spence defended the IBF title 1 time only in 5 dam yrs.

This is a absolute joke , total piss take, i wouldn't wont that belt if i was Boots. I would at least want to fight for a vacant belt against the next best fighter, who ever that is.

this situation is bull**** however, each governing body has their own set of rules. ibf specifically has a clause for their belts/champions that they cannot avoid a mandatory defense based on a previously contracted agreement with another boxer; in this case the rematch clause. i dont agree with it in this situation and i think they should make an exception as long as the winner of the rematch agrees to fight ennis after.

also, i dont think crawford was spence's mandatory so ibf wouldn't have had an issue with that fight not getting made for a while. as for spence dodging crawford, i think that's completely inaccurate. if we follow the chronology, 4-5 years ago they had begun to talk about a fight. spence recently moved up to welter and beat mikey garcia, then took out porter. it was at this time that the fight was gathering steam as negotiations seemed to have begun. 2 months later at the end of 2019, spence almost died in a car accident and was out of commission for over a year. he came back and took a "tune up" against danny garcia in december of 2020 but at this time he was not focused on making the crawford fight happen. this was not him dodging crawford though as he was trying to make a fight with pacquiao. i think we can all agree that a fight with pacquiao takes precedence over crawford.

the fight with pacquiao is scheduled for 2021, spence suffers a detached retina and has to withdraw from the fight with ugas subbing in. spence then fights ugas in 2022, gets the win and with the pacquiao fight no longer possible, he focuses on getting the fight made with crawford. it takes a while to get it signed but nonetheless, it is his next fight. he also had 2 less severe car accidents in this timeframe as well. i wouldnt say he was ducking crawford it just took longer due to circumstance. he almost died right when negotiations first began, came back and took a tune up then got a pacquiao fight which is obviously more important. but he pulled out of that due to a serious injury then on his return, fought the guy that beat pacquiao as a tune up and took the crawford fight as his next fight.

              the chronology goes:
q4 of 2019 - negotiations begin, spence almost dies in a car accident, negotiations postponed.
dec of 2020 - spence comes back and takes a tune up against danny garcia
q1/q2 of 2021 - negotiating a pacquiao fight therefore not focused on crawford
aug 2021 - withdraws from pacquiao fight due to detached retina, ugas beats pacquiao
apr 2022 - fights ugas as tune up
july 2023 - fights crawford and gets completely annihilated

i dont think he was ducking, he only able to take 2 fights during oct 2019 - apr 2022 because he almost died and almost lost an eye. the 2 fights he took were tune up fights against good opponents, he then took crawford as his next fight.

Crawford is bigger than the belts at this point.

...come on man. Even Devin Haney has surpassed him in terms of star power at this point.

I mean I don't think crawford will really care that much.. he achieved what he set out to do and that was become undisputed in a second weight class and that will forever be in the history books and doubtful he'll be at 147 in his next fight anyway. Don't be surprised if the rest start to fragment soon aswell.. Crawford is bigger than the belts right now so the IBF taking the title off him isn't something that will concern him hes just gonna take what fight he can get that's gonna pay him the most money going forward
