  • Comments Thread For: Benavidez: I Think Highly Of Charlo; Wish He Woulda Challenged Himself More Against Canelo

David Benavidez has a higher opinion of Jermell Charlo than the 154-pound champion's inactive twin brother, unbeaten WBC middleweight champ Jermall Charlo.

“I thought it was a good performance,” Benavidez said. “You know, I’m not gonna be the one criticizing Canelo. It was a good performance. I think he shoulda did a little bit more, especially with the 18-by-18 ring [smaller than usual]. Charlo was coming up two weight classes, so he was the bigger man. The punch output was very low. I think [Canelo] threw like 350 punches.”

And this is why it’s fools gold for people to think Canelo is suddenly back to peak form and would beat Benavidez. He had the deck stacked in his favor from ring size, to weight class, to Charlo not having fought in well over a year and his punch output was still low. Benavidez will outwork him and you can bet Canelo won’t want that 18 foot ring if he faces him.

Benavidez may beat canelo he may not it’s not a given either way, so that’s one and two, canelos punch output was what it was because that’s all it needed to be, nothing more nothing less. Don’t fool yourself

You shouldn’t fool yourself. Canelo’s punch output has always been low, due to stamina, and it’s a major reason why he looks good against passive fighters and why he won’t look good against Benavidez. Benavidez won’t allow him to fight at the measured pace canelo likes to fight at. That’s a main reason why Bivol dominated him.

Benavidez was being respectful of Canelo because he doesn't want to jeopardize an opportunity to fight against him down the line. His father is the one doing all of the talking. He was right about Canelo. I think Benavidez would put a lot of pressure on Canelo and make him fight more.

You could be right, however, Benavidez fights nothing like Bivol. Bivol is a master defender and that’s mostly because of his ability to maintain distance with his great footwork. With that said, benavidez does have a higher punch output then Bivol but at what cost vs a master counter puncher vs canelo? Idk man, I’ve been on record saying Bivol would have beat canelo prior to that fight happening and now I’m on record saying if the rematch ever happens I think canelo beats Bivol. I can be wrong I’ve been wrong before plenty of times, I’ve also said benavidez would beat canelo in the past but the way he dominated charlo and I know mell isn’t benavidez im just saying the way canelo looked in doing so, makes me think it’s more of a 50/50 fight now, and whoever can impose their game plan better that night will win

Hopefully we get the chance to see at some point soon. Should Benavidez beat Andrade, which I expect him to do, Canelo vs Benavidez in May makes perfect sense.

Canelo has thrown about 460-480 punches per fight in all of his fights for the past few years. David Benavidez did 550 vs Plant.

Hopefully they don't do Munguía instead.

there is nothing he could have done. He hit Canelo with his best punch and he didn't even blink. Benavidez will eventually find out what Charlo did
