Comments Thread For: Joe Smith's Promoter: If Gilberto Ramirez Comes In Overweight, We're Not Gonna Have A Fight

Joe Smith Jr. has told his promoter, Joe DeGuardia, that he wanted to try fighting in the cruiserweight division for quite some time. That doesn't mean, however, that Smith and his team will allow Gilberto Ramirez any "wiggle room" if the former WBO

If Ramirez comes in overweight I hope Smith sticks to that "no fight" declaration and doesn't take any financial inducement etc.

What other money fights are out there for Joe Smith at this stage of his career if he can't get down to LHW? He should just take the fight regardless if Ramirez shows up at 220lbs. In shape and focused, Joe can absolutely beat El Abzurdo because he's so damn slow and there to be hit. Not sure how much of his head and heart are still in boxing though.

To avoid another debacle similar to Zurdo’s last weigh-in, the parties could have employed a weight management program similar to the one imposed by the WBC in its sanctioned bouts. Weights are checked by submission of video weigh-ins 30, 14, and 7 days prior to the event. If a fighter is significantly above the contracted bout weight limit it would give everyone — the fighters, promoters, broadcasters, etc. enough time to make alternative plans. Canceling a show the day before an event because one fighter or another fails to give fair notice of the impossibility of meeting a contracted weight causes unnecessary chaos and fan resentment.

I like Zurdo bit if he comes in overweight for his CW debut he should retire.

If Zurdo comes in overweight he should be forced to pay for Smith's training camp plus the time that Smith wasted preparing for the fight AND Smith should be allowed to cancel the fight while earning this compensation.
