Morales Camp: "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is!"

Mexican promoter and handler of Erik "El Terrible" Morales, Fernando Beltran, yesterday angrily challenged the camp of Ring Magazine and IBA featherweight champion Manny Pacquiao to "put your money where your mouth is" and laid a $100,000 bet on the line to back up his words but Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach reacted by telling Manila Standard Today "talk is cheap."

That was in fact the point that Beltran was striving to drive home during the well-attended press conference at the MGM Grand Garden Hotel, saying the internet stories claiming that Pacquiao was "going to take out Morales in one round, two rounds, ten rounds or whatever" was all talk. Beltran in an interview with Manila Standard Today said the Pacquiao camp "insulted a great champion" who was "never taken out in 49 fights."

Morales Camp Bluffs, Then Blinks First
          By Winchell Campos

LAS VEGAS—When Manny Pacquiao met Erik Morales in a jampacked press conference Wednesday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena here, the fireworks and hype didn’t come from the two fighters but from their own camps.

Just for the sake of hyping Morales, the Mexican camp bluffed but blinked first.

Morales’ manager Fernando Beltran wagered a $100,000 bet addressed to Pacquiao’s camp, a challenge which proved later to be a bluff and one which meant only to hype his fighter.

“So let me tell you, it is a disrespect for this guy (Pacquiao) to say that they are going to take Erik Morales in one round, two rounds, the 10th round... From Morales’ camp, I will tell the Pacquiao camp, ‘here is a $100,000 dollars, put your money in your mouth’,” said Beltran, obviously ticked at the boisterous and big-mouthed Pacquiao promoter Murad Muhammad of M&M Sports, who hogged most of the time allotment.

“The bet was addressed only to Murad,” said Beltran, after a friend of Pacquiao approached the Mexican, calling his even-money wager after the press conference officially ended.

“We want to call your $100,000 bet,” said the unnamed and moneyed Pacquiao friend. It later turned out Beltran was only publicly betting against Muhammad, who did not make an answer.

Muhammad was heckled by some members of media and other guests for blabbering too long and too much, engaging most of the time in empty talk while trying hard to sell one of the most popular and exciting boxers in the world right now.

Pacquiao, who denied having predicted any round when he is going to knock Morales out, was economical with his words, promising to give everyone a good show and a good fight.

While almost everyone in the Mexican camp was able to talk, Pacquaio’s teammates did not even have a chance to address the media, including Rodolfo Nazario, Freddie Roach, Shelly Finkel, Keith Davidson and Nick Khan.

Nevada Athletic State Commission head Marc Ratner stepped out for reasons unknown in the middle of Muhammad’s sales pitch.

Morales said that he is not going to fold easily after hearing news about Pacquiao destroying sparring partners during training.

“The Mexican never backs off from a fight. We will see who is the toughest bastard (cabron) out there on March 19,” said Morales.

Meanwhile, the interest and fire generated by the Pacquiao-Morales non-title bout has forced the MGM Grand to add 1,000 more seats to accommodate and anticipate a huge turnout.

With three more days left before fight night, only 2,000 tickets remain unsold. With the big weekend ahead including spring break, NASCAR, and March Madness, MGM Grand has increased its seating capacity to 15,000.

Top Rank top honcho Bob Arum said that the Pacquiao-Morales encounter is expected to surpass the income generated by the Morales-Marco Antonio Barrera pay-per-view fight last November, the figures, media interest and projections on this fight definitely higher.

The Barrera-Morales fight generated 325,000 buys, a figure that can easily be surpassed by the fight dubbed “Coming With Everything.”

Its a girl's bluff. You put that money on the house and a lot of people will wager on that. That's a very good deal, a dollar for a dollar if your betting on Pacman.
