All the fights I mentioned were HBO/TVKO PPV's which was the big dog of PPV in those days.

The fights you named in the previous comment were not PPV caliber fights. They simply were not. I think you named Morrison-Mercer for one. Tommy Morrison??? Dude got smashed in one round by some bum from here in Queens, NY named Michael Bennt.

Back in the late 80s and through the mid-90s, KingVision/SET had by far the best PPV cards. It wasn't even close. Ask anyone.

      The fights I mentioned:

-SRL vs Lalonde when SRL was the biggest name in the game & Lalonde had a 175 belt & there was a newly 168lb division trying to give SRL another belt
-Mercer vs Morrison when both were melting mfers & Mercer was a hyped Olympic gold medal winner & Morrison was the star of Rocky 5 & getting mainstream attention
-Nunn vs Toney when Nunn was the #1 MW in the world & a P4P guy HBO was hyping BIG
-Holyfield vs Foreman & Holmes for the 3 main HW belts at the time

And we ain't talking about who was better HBO or Kingvision to begin with so idk wtf that remark is about. We are talking about some alleged change YOU believe took place when PPV's were supposedly only Big Fights & whatever you think the PPV fights are now. This is in your own head. These fights were always fights boxing considered sellable fights not Big Fights. The casual fans have always greatly influenced whats a PPV & whats not a PPV. And those fights sometimes were Big Fights that got casuals attention, but often they are just novelty fights or big names that ppl were willing to pay to see.

Mercer was a 6'1" former army Sargent who happened to win Olympic gold in a weak amateur boxing era. Tommy Morrison was the fraudulent next Great White Hype from Oklahoma who was exposed by Mercer and a bum named Michael Bennt.

Leonard was no longer a huge name when he fought Lalonde. Lalonde was a stiff who luckily won his title from another stiff named Lesley Stewart in Trinidad. Ray Leonard was coming off years of inactivity due to eye issues. The boxing public was not fascinated by him like it was in 1981.

Neither of these two fights you cited were "must see" fights and neither was worthy of PPV or even CCTV. I saw Leonard-Lalonde at MSG on CCTV like a fool. I believe they fought at a catch weight way below 175 to weaken Lalonde. Imagine needing a catch weight to weaken a bum like Lalonde.

I've been following boxing since 1973. I'm not one of these casual fans with no recollection of facts from past eras. You seem to think I'm some guy who just started watching boxing when Floyd and Manny came along.

LOL no not at all. I think you are trying to reinvent boxing's past with PPV's. Fights have ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT SELLABLE fights not big fights. Big fights just happen to be sellable. But most sellable fights aren't big fights.

          This is what you said.

"Back in the day, only true super fights were deemed worthy of PPV."

This is wrong as wrong can be.

PPV's have ALWAYS been about maxxing out revenue by appealing to casuals. Sometimes the PPV's were super fights. Usually the PPV's weren't tho. Thats all I'm saying. I'm not talking "must see" or your stance on them decades later or at the time. The reality is PPV's are about what ppl will buy not "must see" fights. It isn't now & it never was.

"Deemed worthy" by true hardcore fans, not TV execs or scoundrels like King and Arum. You totally missed the context.

Who's deeming fights PPV worthy now? Ppl complain about fights not being PPV worthy now as much as they did then.

The reality AGAIN is nothing has changed with PPV. Its the same hustle to max out revenue &/or minimize risk that it ever was.

The only ones they can hustle are suckers with money to throw away. The real fans with discernible intelligence know a dud from a gem.

You change goalposts during a debate more than a bipolar girl.

What goalposts have I changed? I merely said that most of the 90s fights you referred to were not PPV quality, and they weren't. Mercer-Morrison was not fit for PPV. No sane person would argue that it was.

You implied &/or said something has changed with PPV quality from back in the day vs now. I called bs on that. There are as many trash "non-PPV worthy" events as there ever was. Nothing has changed.
