Comments Thread For: The Other September Gem

By Cliff Rold - For most fans, in the US and the world, the fight of the month will happen when Saul Alvarez faces Jermell Charlo. Everything else is playing for second best. This month, what might be second best on paper is pretty damn good. In the wee hours of the morning stateside, a pair of junior flyweights will lock horns in a fight both significant in the moment and to what has quietly been an excellent era for their division.

"A Budler win wouldn't get the South African into that air but it would recast his career in its twilight."

    Why not?
Hasn't Budler achieved as much, if not more?
It ain't easy winning on the road in Mexico...

Thank you, BoxingScene, for giving press to these lower weight divisions. I’d like to see more of it! And, for the record, much less about Tyson Fury, among many, many others.

Another highlight of this card is the presence of Tenshin Nasukawa making his second appearance. What?

Nasukawa may be best known for losing an exhibition fight against Mayweather, but that fight was contested 6 divisions up from his usual class, and Nasukawa is one of the greatest kickboxers of the modern era, racking up a record of 44-0, and defeating a veritable who's who of kickboxing royalty on the way, including reigning ONE destroyer Rodtang and the only 3 division K1 champion, Takeru Segawa. He's also undefeated in 4 MMA matches as well, including one win by submission and two by knockout.

He was slated to face the undefeated 9-0 Juan Flores Aceves, but the latter had to withdraw due to COVID, and has been replaced by Luis Guzman.

i hear you but they are spot on on these lighter weight divisions around here. Some people do not like the lighter weights me i am fine with them fly super fly strawmen whatever they can diliver a lot of action when you get the right two guys in the ring. Japanese fighters are the new Mexican fighters is how i see it. Samuri and all that good stuff not joking that is how i view it. Enjoy the fights should be a good weekend of fights for the pure fight fans. No imitations will do starting in 36 hours......

Arguably the best feature of the lower weight divisions is that they are a lot like boxers used to be in general — guys have to fight each other to make any dough. There’s far less ducking if any.

just a a guess on my part but i bet they dont get paid as much as the other weight classes overall so then for you gotta get out there and perform and get noticed for what you can do not what you say about yourself. so much talk in boxing anymore. used to be you fought n after the fight you talked now it is reversed and when a fighter talks and looses he immidiately starts to complain about all the reasons he lost. yea it a a odd sport sometimes but then they battle in the ring and it just takes off then it is worth it and the stuff that goes on before and after fights gets forgotten.

Two of the guys I'm most hyped about in boxing rn are lil guys which is unusual for me. Tenshin is one of them (the other is Ginjiro Shigeoka) cuz he's a bad mfer & it is sorta effed up he's known for being the guy getting stopped by Floyd. Def looking forward to see him Monday morning & to see how far he gets in boxing.
