Comments Thread For: Jermall Charlo on Working with Roy Jones: He's Mentoring Me Every Step of the Way; Feeling Stronger

Troubled middleweight champion Jermall Charlo says he has been getting guidance from Roy Jones Jr. The native of Houston, Texas, has not fought since June of 2021, when he won a decision against Juan Macias Montiel. Charlo has stated his inactivity stems from unresolved turbulence in his personal life.

Good for him. I hope he gets it together in time to save his life. There's a lot of lost young men out there.

I don’t know if Roy Jones is a great trainer but he’s a good dude and seems to have a way if connecting with fighters. Anyone seen the video of him with Jared Anderson?

Letting your prime slip away seems to be the pbc way.

            I'm not a world-class boxer, but I box, and I relate 100%.

Over the last two and a half months, I've lost 30 pounds and looking to get down to Super Middle; my previous fight was at Heavyweight. But I'm separated from my wife and children and am able to totally focus on getting my mind and body right.

This sport requires you to be right mentally, just as much, if not more than, physically. I'm 31; I'll be okay. Charlo will be, too. As long as the mind is right, everything will be alright.

Can't wait to see you fight again, when you're ready. It's too dangerous to try without being such.

One of PBC's very privileged guys, holding a title without defending it. This guy's main problem is fear of losing. Nothing else.

I'm just glad the fake mental issues didn't come up in this article. Because it is fake perpetuated by "enablers," and I say that with a very strong dislike of the word and people who think they're helping when in fact they're destroying them.

Before Fury in 2016, was there ever this much bluster about mental health issues scuppering fighters in the prime of their careers? It's getting to be a trend now – Ryan, Teofimo, Jermall...

Not dismissing them or anything – I'm as barmey as they come, and only getting worse – but these are meant to be the manliest, baddest athletes out there who talk such ungodly amounts of shit but then disappear under a rock when their headspaces aren't right. I don't remember any of this even a decade ago.
