He should have made sure he was in the top-10 and then he might have got the fight legitimately. Joshua mostly only looks outside the top-10 when he needs an easy fight after a loss.

Agreed, Joshua got the knock out. He got his two tuneups and looked awful in both. Wilder fight next?
Looking awful depends on how you analyse the performance.
Joshua vs both Franklin & Helenius won 95% of the rounds.
Joshua won both fights, and has achieved his first knock-out win since Pulev.
His performances have not been super great, I would rate them as satisfactory to Good 'No way have they been awful'.
Fury's performance vs Wallin for example was a terrible performance, especially for a fighter with his reputation 'Against a then European level fighter at best' etc.
