Glad Breadman mentioned todays welterweights are same day weigh in era middleweights and, of course, this incongruity in comparing modern fighters to the past spans all weight divisions.

But I would add that not all fighters rehydrate to the same degree in this era, and that distorts perceptions too. HBO used to do a great job trying to find out functional fight night weights but every broadcaster since has just buried their heads in the sand. Shame.

another thing that fails to get mentioned a lot in comparing older generations of boxers to modern ones: Today's fighters make enough money to pick and choose who they fight. They fight twice a year in showcase fights, rarely competing against guys who can beat them. Older generations had to fight against all comers just to put food on the table. I think there's a huge skill gap.

Absolutely. Even some of the greats used to suffer really bad losses, wipeout defeats, when they were willing to fight anyone regardless of style matchups or timing the bouts to their advantage. I’m thinking Duran getting bombed out by Hearns, Griffith getting whacked out by Carter. Napoles challenging Monzon really was a insane physical challenge for the man genuinely moving up 2 divisions, unlike Charlo who almost certainly rehydrated close to Canelo’s weight anyway.

We don’t tend to see such bad losses now but when a top fighter does suffer an upset, like Lomachenko losing to Lopez, fans lose all kinds of perspective because they don’t view the sport in the right context. Loma was one modern guy who genuinely didn’t care who he fought. Even agreed to give up purse money to make that fight against a seriously dangerous guy naturally two divisions bigger.

USYK, LOMA are ALWAYS on the road. so is a list of others. also I never heard those excuses and back slaps for Hatton coming over here and getting drummed by Mayweather. silly how ppl think Americans are different in that aspect of the game
