Roy Jones targets September return v Woods

By Anthony Evans: Roy Jones Junior is considering a shock return to the ring later this year and has targeted old foe Clinton Woods, now the newly crowned IBF light heavyweight champion, for a September comeback date.
The four-division superstar has always maintained he may not be through with the sport despite his two knockout losses to Antonio Tarver last May and then Glen Johnson in Memphis last September. However, that RJJ is even thinking of a return - and at 175lbs no less - after looking so spent last year will come as a surprise to many.
But Brad Jacobs, who runs Jones's Square Ring Inc organisation with the former pound-for-pound king, told SecondsOut: "I've had conversations with Robert Waterman (Wood's co-promoter). Number one we were congratulating them on winning title because we knew them coming off of the 2002 fight but, also, looking down the road, we will keep them high on our list of options as Roy makes decisions about his future."
Jones, who turned 36 in January, stopped Woods in six round in Portland three years ago and, also factoring in that the Englishman now has the IBF title, it is a comeback fight which would make sense for Jones if indeed he decides to return.
Jacobs added: "Really, Roy hasn't said either way if he's fighting again. He's doing what I expected him to do, he's living his life, laying out other things with his rapping and basketball and if the itch comes back we'll be ready and if it doesn't then it'll be a farewell. I wouldn't write off a comeback at this point, though. We're just looking to see what is out there and when Roy makes a decision we'll be ready either way."
Interestingly, Jones himself has been quoted several time saying he doesn't want to go out a loser. So, assuming for a moment that 'RJ' does return for later this year and that Woods is on top of his shopping list, it is reasonable to assume the fight could be staged in England.
Not withstanding the Florida quicksilver's bad KO losses to Tarver and Johnson (who also has a win over Woods), HBO may not be too keen to pay top dollar for a rematch of what was a one-sided fight. However, with the kind of live gate the bout would generate in the UK, plus a fee from UK TV, HBO may not have to break the bank in order for Jones to receive the kind of money he has grown accustomed to.
Jacobs said: "It looked at point one that it was a definite that we were going to England with Roy v Clinton Woods in 2002 but then Nike, who were sponsoring Roy, wanted the fight near to their home up in Portland. But if that hadn't happen we would have been in England. But, hey, maybe it can still happen."

Woods's co-promoters Dennis Hobson and Robert Waterman confirmed that, naturally, they would be interested in a Jones rematch for their man but added they've had several more serious offers from across the Atlantic.
