  • Comments Thread For: Golden Boy Prez Opens Up About De La Hoya: 'It's Probably Never Going to Be Smooth Sailing'

Golden Boy President Eric Gomez had some illuminating comments about his employer and close friend Oscar De La Hoya. Gomez, a longtime employee of the promotional company founded by De La Hoya, offered a frank assessment of the Hall of Fame fighter in the soul-baring, two-part HBO documentary about De La Hoya's life, The Golden Boy, which premiered last week.

Oscar, as a boxer and promoter, has made enormous contributions to the sport we all know and love.

Boxers usually have a dark past. It's what keeps them in the gym.

Hanging up the gloves must've done something, and now, this is what we're seeing more and more.

Oscar should not have taken that last fight with Pacquiao. Kind of a troubled guy but was once a real killer in the ring.

gotta give Oscar respect for being open and honest about the stuff he’s gone through and the regrets he has. Hopefully it means he can actually start working on overcoming it. I’ll celebrate just about anyone trying to work on themselves. If Oscar got himself together he still has time to make GBP a company that out lives him.

So many Oscar fans were calling Richard Schaefer a "snake," "traitor," etc., but they should NOW understand, that Schaefer was the man keeping GBP afloat, and that Oscar was TOTALLY incompetent, and incapable of running the show, which is why Gomez is running things now!

Good thing they didn't have Canelo and Ryan Garcia in the documentary!

Regardless if Oscar was incapable he is owner and Schaefer was a snake for trying to make Oscar sell Golden Boy Promotions for 3 million dollars while oscar was out of his mind in re-hab. That's low and dirty.

Stop it with that BS narrative already! Time is the great truth teller and it has revealed how incompetent Schaefer truly is running a company look at both Ringstar and Probellum which he ran are both now extinct.

It just go to show that Oscar is the one who has the relationships and connections within the sport of boxing. Schaefer had the leverage from Oscar being the owner. Schaefer was able to be very successful working under Oscar's name. Now we see he can't do the same without being tied to GBP. Same with Gomez. You think Gomez will be able to leave and start his own promotional company and be successful if he wanted? Probably not. Oscar may be what he is, but one thing you can't take away from him is that he is the driving force of GBPs success.

It can’t be denied that Oscar was elite as a boxer and consistently faced the best opponents available, which is something missing from boxing today. But as a person, I feel it was always clear that he was a bullsh** artist and tried to create a persona that wasn’t him. Had no clue he lied about his mothers dying wish, which was a scumbag thing to do. In addition with this documentary, you can also now see that he clearly wasn’t a good brother, significant other and worst of all, wasn’t a good father. As he said himself, the term golden boy as it relates to him was all bullsh**.

He wasn't a "snake" when he went into damage control for Oscar, when he was cross-dressing!
