Comments Thread For: Derrick James on Terence Crawford: What Makes Him Dynamic Is His Athleticism

Trainer Derrick James believes Terence Crawford's abilities in the ring are mostly the result of his gifted physical attributes. The veteran trainer of unified WBC, WBA, IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. thinks the WBO titlist from Omaha, Nebraska, is a particularly difficult adversary because of his athleticism, more than, say, his skills.

Derrick is a helluva trainer and was a decent fighter himself, but he's missing a lot if all he sees in Crawford is athleticism. What about his brain and his ring smarts? Split second adjustments? What about his accuracy and punch placement? Punch selection? Ambidextrous switch hitting? Speed? Power? Killer instinct? fighting heart? Conditioning? Clean living- no Henny, no smoking? never been knocked out from a punch, or from the pavement? Derrick is basically revealing that he thinks Bud is weak on defense that he just gets by on fast twitch muscle. He's alluding to the narrative that like the great Roy Jones, Bud is naturally gifted but somehow technically or defensively flawed and that Errol is gonna be like Antonio Tarver on Saturday.

It's also what makes him dangerous, I'm still picking Spence to win this fight possibly by knockout.

Derrick James is not right. But there's a reason why he's saying what he's saying.
Crawford is athletic, yes. He's strong and he wrestled too. Spence is strong too, but not as agile.

But Crawford's greatest strength is same as great fighters like James Toney.
To figure you out during the fight, nullify your strengths and KO you.
So it's really Bud's brain that is his greatest asset.

I hope this is not going to be a cagey affair there is a lot riding on the line for both fighters. Spence undoubtedly will be pressing the action but crawfish will be waiting like a sniper to counter him. Which will deter Errol from throwing and attacking the body, especially in the first few rounds.
If Crawfish’s power Does not trouble Spence then I will make a small prayer for Crawfish’s ribs because they are getting barbecued with hot sauce as we know Bud can’t handle the hot sauce

I agree. Crawford's ring IQ goes deep. So far, no matter what has happened, he has found a way not just to adjust to his advantage, but to bury his opponent. There is no doubt, he is a very skilled boxer, and tough with it.

                    But...

It's a different level of opponent he is facing with Spence. Maybe that ring IQ will deliver once again, but Spence is a bit of a monster. He is going to pressure Bud like no one before. I can't call it.
