The Theater, Madison Square Garden, New York City - Junior middleweight phenom Xander Zayas (16-0, 10 KOs) kicked off the Puerto Rican Day Parade festivities without a hitch. The 20-year-old scored a dominant eight-round unanimous decision against California-born veteran Ronald "Diablo" Cruz (18-3-1, 12 KOs) to defend his NABF and NABO belts

Early on He seemed like he might be special but last few times out he's just been, good. Not great. They need to make Zayas vs Jahi Tucker. Both talented and young but rough around the edges. I honestly don't know who'd win that fight.

I see him being more of a Carlos Quintana than a Miguel Cotto, but the kid is pretty good. He lacks the special so far like all the other PR greats have shown. He is very fundamentally sound at this part of his career which is good for him.

Pretty good looking contender but he does t have what Trinidad, Rosario, Camacho, Cotto had. The search continues for the next great Boricua

This was a good progressive win for Zayas, there was too much expected from this young fighter from the very start.
No one had been able to knock out his most recent opponent Ronald Cruz, so he looked good in dropping him twice, and winning every round.
I would definitely like to see him take on the undefeated up, and coming Jahi Tucker next, who would provide Zayas with a very stern test.
Then by June of 2024, if he's headlining at the MSG, at that point we'll know if he's the next great fighter from the island of Puerto Rico.
I believe he's on his way to do just that, and Tucker is the next step on the journey to accomplishing that goal.
Xander Zayas hasn't filled out yet, and the 154 pound class might not be where his greatest potential lies, that potential might be reached in the 160 pound weight class.
The next two years will either be his crowning achievement as the superstar champion from P.R. or the latest fighter who failed to live up to the promotional hype.
