Canelo Alvarez, unquestionably one of the greatestboxers of this era and one of the most decorated fighters in the history of the sport, has undeniably accomplished many incredible feats inside the ring.
He has amassed multiple world titles and accolades along with a long list of successful defenses. He has solidified his legacy, cementing himself as one of the all-time greats.
But despite his impressive accomplishments, Canelo can not lay claim to the mantle of the Greatest of All Time (GOAT).
His two biggest fights were losses, and these were to Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol. Which, we must all admit, proves that he still has a way to go before he can be considered among the all-time elites.
His loss to Mayweather when he was a much younger fighter demonstrated his lack of experience at that time and his loss to Bivol as a seasoned vet, when he was at his zenith, showed that he is still not on the level of the truly all-time elite.
The undeniable truth is that Canelo lacks the speed, reflexes, and explosiveness of the most elite fighters of his era.
While Canelo Alvarez is indeed one of the most talented boxers of the modern era, boasting an impressive array of offensive and defensive techniques, and has fought against some of the very best the world has to offer, what keeps him one step away from being amongst the all-time greats of the sport is his lack of truly elite speed.
One need not look any further than his aforementioned fights with Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol to see the obvious truth.
Mayweather, particularly, was able to outmaneuver Canelo, staying ever so slightly out of his range, making Canelo miss, and ultimately punishing him for his slow hand speed.
It was the same story with Bivol as well, who had the speed and reflexes to slip almost every single one of Canelo's punches, and make him pay for every single misstep.
The reality is that Canelo's speed doesn't match that of the greatest fighters of his era, or of the eras of the past, and that could be the difference between an admittedly great Hall of Fame career and his being stuck at the top of his game, just short of the immortals.
Therefore, while Canelo's undeniably iconic and historic career deserves to be lauded and recognized for what it’s worth, he still cannot, and will not, lay claim to the title of GOAT.Comment
