Comments Thread For: De La Hoya on Canelo: After Ryder Tune-Up, He Has To Fight The Big Boys, Benavidez and Bivol

Oscar De La Hoya has urged his former star client to pursue his next several fights with some semblance of urgency. De La Hoya, the head of Golden Boy Promotion, was pleased to hear that Canelo Alvarez will be returning to his homeland of Mexico for the first time in over a decade to defend his four 168-pound titles against London's John Ryder May 6 at Akron Stadium in Guadalajara.

Didn't Oscar say that he think Canelo shouldn't fight Bivol the first time? Now that he clearly lost he should fight him again suddenly

Oscar was one of my fighters, and I still watch those old fights, legendary, exciting.

But as a promoter, stay in ones lane I'd say I guess. His own fighter Gilberto Ramirez got his ears boxed off by Bivol. Canelo did better against Bivol than Zurdo. He won a few rounds at least.

Like many others, I too had a lot of respect for Oscar as a fighter but of late he has become a bit of a buffoon. His comments and advice to Canelo are worth as much as a bucket of spit. Canelo sued Oscar, won the suit, and ditched him as a promoter because Oscar was holding him back and damaging his career. More importantly, De La Hoya lied to Canelo and withheld important information from Canelo about promises he made to DAZN. It is all pretty sad.

Yeah, well Oscar said once he would run for president too, so take what he says with a grain of salt. He is kind of nutty but he was one of the great fighters in history.

I certainly don't want Canelo to fight Bivol again, because then he has an excuse for losing. Hopefully he'll man-up and fight Benevidez sometime this year.

I don’t like Oscar at all, but what exactly is wrong with him saying that canelo should make the best fights available in this next stretch? When Oscar was older than canelo he fought Hopkins , Floyd and pac. So he can speak on this. In regards to holding back canelos career , it’s without a doubt a fact that canelo’s biggest fights have come with Oscar as his promoter. From fights with Floyd, Lara, cotto, ggg 2x, those have been canelos most meaningful fights. If anyone’s holding canelo back, it’s been Hearn who seems content to keep lining up these Brits who pose minimal threat.

No, don't want to see Bivol fight again.
