Can Virgil Hunter train anyone besides Andre Ward?

Tony Yoka just lost. Mario Barrios went back to Bob Santos.

That leaves Hunter with Buatsi as his only other major fighter. Unless I’m forgetting someone.

He did a decent job with Khan I thought, but he’s never done anything that impressive aside from training Ward.

Definitely a situation where a fighter helped make a trainer but one thing you have to give Hunter credit for is he took a kid off the street and turned him into one of the best fighters of his generation. Is there an element of luck in finding the right kid? Of course, but he still deserves a lot of credit for being a major part of the Andre Ward story.

The most proven and best trainers, are the trainers that can rebuild fighters or the trainers that help build fighters from grass roots level.

Virgil Hunter has on his resume helped build a fighter from grass roots 'Andre Ward'. And Hunter has also helped rebuild Amir Khan a certain stage of his career 'Were he did produce some really good performances'.

Amir Khan's win over Devon Alexander was one his best performances skill for skill and wins.

So really Hunter is a proven top trainer.

Do trainers, only train fighters they know can win? Or do they want to challenge themselves and really help a fighter at any level? Are trainers Glory hunters?

Somebody like Adam Booth has not trained a World Champion since David Haye 'This does not mean he is not a great trainer'.

I personally have always also rated Don Charles as a boxing trainer highly 'Solid trainer'.

Sure, but he's just a trainer.

Just like Buddy McGirt, Adam Booth, Freddie Roach, etc - he was a "flavor of the month" trainer. There was a time when everyone wanted into his gym. But then the winning streak ended and everyone realized these guys are JUST trainers and the crowd of fighters went elsewhere. There is no magic formula - they can't polish turds.

Hunter knows more about boxing in his pinky then you do in your entire body .

Really people who don’t train fighters shouldn’t be asking this otherwise they know the answer already ,which is it’s up to the fighter to listen to the trainer he’s the one fighting not the trainer and most trainer and fighter connections aren’t in sync otherwise everyone would be a champion or look great fighting .

Freddie Roach has a solid body of work that he can point to. Great trainer without question.

Buddy McGirt to a lesser extent.

Adam Booth? I remember him being hyped as the Dark Lord a few years back but has he actually produced successful fighters since?

Agree for the most part but Adam booth guided both Andy Lee and Ryan Burnett to World titles post David Haye.

He’s been hit and miss tbh. Booth is quite one dimensional stylistically, he likes his fighters to be athletic counter punchers. If you look at Haye, Groves, Burnett, Kelly etc they all boxed in that same sort of style.

The two current great trainers in boxing are Nacho Berenstain and Roach.
