Comments Thread For: Mario Barrios' Trainer Believes That a Showdown Against Vergil Ortiz Would Be a Mega Fight

At one point, the career of Mario Barrios shone incandescently. But after brazenly attempting to turn back the challenge of Gervonta Davis in 2021, the 27-year-old was forced to hit the reset button. Although he experienced loads of success at 140 pounds, the San Antonio native believed that a move up in weight would afford his body a reprieve.

Vergil Ortiz would destroy Barrios. Barrios is a good tough fighter but he’s a level below the top guys.

Pump the brakes! Rashidi Ellis, Radzhab Butaev, or Jamal James, would make more sense!

Barrios will not win a welterweight title against ANYONE named in this article. He may win a vacant against some other chump. But that’s about it

I like Barrios I wouldn't want to see him splattered against Ortiz, but that would be a good payday for him, and that's the business his in

Ortiz would definitely pummel Barrios into another knockout defeat, because Ortiz is just a better all around fighter than Barrios.

This guy Santos sounds so full of himself.
I get it that he has to believe in his fighters. But it seems like since he's training a decent stable of fighters every week he's coming out with some b.s statements.

Mario Barrios can fight Boots Ennis, Bob Santos just said it!!! He's not busy at the moment. Give Bozy Ennis a call right now. They would most likely love to hear from you and your team. They seem like very friendly people over there. Please call them immediately

Santos is saying, in other words, show us the money, because Barrios is not quite ready for those names yet, as an almost 2 years out of the ring Thurman showed. Barrios has improved, but he needs to continue to fight guys just a little below that level until he's at his peak, unless he's willing to take a string of losses for the bread.
