  • Comments Thread For: Subriel Matias-Jeremias Ponce: Stats and Stakes

By Cliff Rold - Despite his inactivity, Josh Taylor remains the rightful, lineal king of the Jr. welterweight division. Taylor holds that position with a lot fewer belts than he did last time he stepped in the ring...and given the current state of boxing it's probably for the better. Extra belts make for incentives to make more interesting fights in the absence of a champion available to defend. It was one incentive for the excellent Regis Prograis-Jose Zepeda match last year.

"those who scratch their heads at sanctioning body rankings can feel as justified as ever here. "

Yeah, they each won their fight for the IBF eliminator tournament so no one should be scratching their head. Great research Cliffy old boy...

Portorican should get his hand raised on this one.

Subriel should win, based on quality of opposition but Ponce is beyond a 'dark horse' he is a 'blacker than the Devil's riding cloak' horse. Looking at Ponce's record it is just impossible to say if he can fight or not & I'm kind've aware that everything people are saying, 'lousy record of no-marks' 'no losses but no competition' 'never fought outside the Argentine' etc could've been said 50 years ago about Carlos Monzon. I'm intrigued by this one but I'm keeping my money in my wallet.
