  • Comments Thread For: Wood On Underdog Role: I Have To Admit, I Kind Of Like; Enjoy Proving People Wrong

By Jake Donovan - The underdog label has been attached to Leigh Wood for so long that he can faintly recall the last time was expected to win a fight. The same task awaits the 34-year-old Brit, who risks his WBA featherweight title versus streaking contender Mauricio Lara (25-2-1, 18KOs). Wood is currently listed at +200 according to bet365, while the visiting Lara is a healthy -275 favorite despite the title fight taking place at Nottingham Arena in Wood's hometown of Nottingham, England (Saturday, DAZN, 2:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. GMT).

This fight should be wildly exciting whilst it lasts and with Lara 1/3 0n we all know what is expected but don't forget Wood can **** too!

Wood should go to his body

Lara gets clearly hurt when he’s hit to the body

I guess I'm missing something because I'm perplexed how Lara is favourite. When he fought Warrington everyone admitted Lara was an explosive puncher but one with very rudimentary skills. Josh fought an incredibly dumb-ass fight & Lara beat him. The rematch was just hotting up when the cut happened. Since then I can't see what Lara has done to suggest he is anything more than an explosive puncher with very rudimentary skills. Lara has that good win over Warrington, Leigh has better wins over Xu Can & Conlan. I genuinely can't understand what makes Lara favourite in this one.

Yes my man, exactly my thoughts. Lara has been wild with poor footwork when ive watched him. Leigh has great fundamentals and has the capability to box around him and put the pressure on in the second half. Travelled to Nottingham to be there tomorrow and expecting fireworks but Leigh to come through

Yeah, thanks GeordieG. I agree that Leigh is fundamentally sound. His boxing style is correct with nothing flashy but no obvious faults. I think that over the last few years Leigh has realised that he can generate real power & that has been the difference that has propelled him up the ranks. If you were being critical you'd say he was a bit too one-paced & predictable but we saw what happened to Conlan who, you would've thought, had the speed & skills to take advantage of that. If Shakur Stevenson had stayed at 126 I don't think Leigh would've enjoyed that, but I'm reasonably confident he can see off Lara.

I don't understand why Wood is the underdog. Bettors win a lot of money.
