Very simple:
First fight Allen was Bernard's mandatory, the fight was a NC, due to an unfortunate event involving Mill Lane. The fight had to be immediately rescheduled.
Second fight: Hopkins lays down an ass whoopin.
Third fight: 5 YEARS LATER Allen worked his way back up the ranks to #1 contender of the middleweight division, and once again he was made Bernard's mandatory. Hopkins didn't want the fight at all but he would have been stripped a belt if he didn't fight him. So Hopkins beats him easily.
A lot of it was boxing politics. Hopkins struggled to get a big name fight for years, so he was forced to beat everyone the organizations put in front of him. As he put it, every fight was a must win to him because he knew if he ever lost the belts, he would never in his day get a big pay day.
