against the big WW's, do you think Floyd has a better chance of beating them if he fights like he did at the lower weights or if he pot shots? I ask this because some people thinks pot shots makes Floyd unbeatable and some people think that if he keeps pot shotting then he's going to eventualy lose because its just not enough output against a big strong man.
I admit that I was 100% wrong about the JMM fight. I just knew that Floyd would be offensively aggressive when he goes back to fighting guys near his own size or smaller but I guess not. Again, I didnt see the fight though so Im not totally sure on what happened. Whats strange is that we all know that Roger is an offensive guy and even Sr. said after the fight that if youre gone for 2 years then you are going to be rusty no matter what. He said that if Floyd wasnt rusty then he wouldve knocked him out and you can tell that he was rusty because he didnt let his hands go. Thats what Sr. said. Even a writer who rips Floyd some said that he still respects him as a great fighter but his only problem with Floyd is that he doesnt take risk in the ring. He said that he definatly couldve stopped JMM if he wanted to but its not in him.
I now have 2 questions. 1 is that with Senior & Roger telling him to let his hands go more, will Floyd get back to that style? My other question is what changed to make Floyd strictly pot shot now. Even when he does throw the rare combo you can tell he's not even that comfortable with it anymore and he immediatly tries to get out of dodge or hold. His combo now is only like 2 or 3 punches at the most and its once every 4 rounds. I use to think he just stopped because he was fighting big guys so he had to pot shot but you can tell that its mental now. Thats just how he fights. Then I started to think that some was his dad. Even before the JMM fight in the ring his dad whispered to him to keep his hands up. Thats automaticaly putting a defensive mindset in Floyd's head and having him think that he might get caught.
Before the Oscar fight his dad told him non stop about Oscar's hook. I think Floyd was a little scared going into that fight not knowing if he could handle 154 and if he could take a punch from an Oscar who just decapitated Mayorga. Still, whats the excuse with JMM? Unless he was rusty or he just wanted to carry JMM to make it look good. I mean if he had stopped him in the 2nd round then everyone wouldve talked non stop about the size but atleast now he actually is getting alot of credit for out skilling JMM. I also have this other theory that his pot shotting started when they were putting him in more & more with huge sparring partners with big power like Jantuah. I think they felt that if he could work with Kofi all the time then who at the lower weights could hurt Floyd but I evnison Floyd in sparring pot shotting with Jantuah because of his size & power and it carried over into the ring.
What do you guys think and which way does he have a better chance to win against bigger guys? Its harder to let your hands go against Southpaws but against a righty he can do it all day because he has mastered his D against them and cant be hit clean. Thats why I would love to see him let his hands go against a Shane or Cotto but I think he doesnt want to get hit anymore or be in a war. His mindset is all on skill now. You can tell that its even hurting his power now because he doesnt commit to any punch. People are ripping his power but the truth is he's not really throwing a real power punch like he did against N'Dou. He's not commiting to the punches anymore
