I remember when Richard Schaefer was still with HBO. Like Arum, he had issues he didn't appreciate. Over time his dislike of HBO built up. He even doubted the PPV figures HBO releases. He expected more. (It was general knowledge that HBO didn't like PPVs. They'd rather do fights on regular subscription.)

When Schaefer moved to Showtime and worked with friend Espinoza, he finally had first hand information about the numbers. During his first year, he wanted every semi big fight on PPV. To make long story short, he started seeing real numbers. They're not good. The Maidana/Broner, for example, was supposed to be on PPV... Schaefer in the end stopped expecting huge numbers. He usually would casually predict or throw figures like 2-3 million buys on Mayweather fights when he was with HBO.

Espinoza: PPV Is A Useful Tool, But It Should Be Used Sparingly
            https://www.boxingscene.com/espinoza...ringly--135364

What Espinoza didn't mention here is it's a tool to make fights happen when fighters/promoters/managers demand big money that is not available.

PPV numbers are severely exaggerated even in recent past. About time people stop caring about them.

i agree. 75 isn't a lot of money, it's basically spare change. i think every fight should be ppv and they should charge $500. maybe $1000 for good fights. that's still less than buying ringside tickets. we need to support boxing and DEMAND $500 ppv's to keep the sport alive.
