Comments Thread For: Devin Haney Offers Teofimo Lopez A Bit Of Advice: "He Needs To Take Some Time Away From The Sport"

Devin Haney will be the first to admit that he isn't the biggest fan of Teofimo Lopez. But, regardless of their differences, Haney (29-0, 15 KOs) has always revered his overall skills inside the ring.

Haney could be right. Teo hasn’t looked good since the first half of the Loma fight.

I don’t think it would help him, he took more than enough time off after the Kambosos fight. He needs to learn to deal with that loss and move on and the best way to do this is by staying active. He also needs to learn how to fight offensively and how to set up combinations and how to cut off the ring and wear his opponent down. He's a tiny bit like Canelo when he was young, very good counter puncher if you're right in front of him, as soon as you start moving he starts following you and couldn't get his punches off, he improved a ton in that regard and I think Teo should work on that preferably with a new trainer.

Teofimo has not improved in years. One can argue that he has regressed. The place to start, as others have pointed out, is to replace his team with a top-level trainer. His father is toxic to Teofimo and has demonstrated that he is only capable of shouting and waving his arms excitedly in the corner. It would be a big plus if Sr. would ditch his ego and tell his son that a new trainer and a new team are what Jr. needs.

Facts! His Father needs to become his Manager, and not his Trainer!

A layoff right now wouldn't help him. At140 lbs he is going to have a hard time.

If anyone can remember far before Kambosis. Teo was having emotional drama in his life with his family. They are all kinda emotional people. This is nothing new.
He has to learn how to deal with others emotions. I actually think he’s a great fighter. I’m impressed with Haneys advice. Great advice.

How will that change all the tactical errors he make? Maybe his dad needs to take time away so he can gain some perspective on his training methods

I think people underrate Martin. In Teo's last 2 fights he fought a face-first punching bag in Campa and a tricky mover in Martin. Two opposite fighters. Plus hitting a tricky guy who is bigger than past opponents isn't easy. Just my observation.
