No, fighters sell fights...King just steals most of the money they make from them.

Don King just sets up the fights he wants to benifit his fighters. The dude is just a crook who tries to control all of boxing like it was his personal invention.

Boxing existed and was extremely popular before Don King. Had he never stepped into the game I don't think the sport would be any worse. I think it would be much better. I know he made a lot of great fights happen, but he wasn't the one who made the boxers he pitted (and unfortunately still does) against each other great, he just put the money up and got them to sign on the dotted line. Is there skill to that? Yes. Could someone else with more scruples (doesn't have to have a ton of scruples just not as bad as DK) done the same thing? Absolutely. I think Don King aspires to be like Fidel Castro. He wants to keep a stranglehold over the entire world of boxing. And like Castro he has been very good at it. I hate Castro (I'm Cuban-American, it's my right) but I would never say he was ****** or incompetent just a domineering, narcissitic, crook who gets off on controling others. Don King and Cuba would be better off without them.

How's that for a comparison? I'm a little tired. If I rambled or didn't make sense, sue me.

I still am in favor of him promoting fights. Maybe not necessarily managing the financial packages.
To each his own. Just make sure you at least dislike Fidel for me.

Where's the option for "He should have been killed ten times over and I volunteer to bust him in the head with an axe?"

            That's my choice.

I sort of like Don King because he is so damn charismatic, but mostly I hate him. I don't want him in boxing. I am totally against all promoters, yes even Sugar Ray Leonard. That's not to say Leonard was bad or corrupt, but I think the way boxing is set up is all wrong anyhow.

King certainly has helped boxing, but that doesn't justify his practices. He rips off these poor boxers, sucks them dry, and leaves them for dead. He is the most elusive promoter and definitely the most intelligent.

Don't let the Bob Arums and Lou DiBellas of the world fool you. They are just as bad as Don King. Actually they're arguably worse. King will keep fighters even after it seems every last penny has been squeezed from them. How else could you justify King holding onto John Ruiz and Terry Norris?

The FBI has all the major promoters in trouble, except Don King. The US Government 0 for X amount of attempts to get Don King for shady boxing practices. They have Arum and Kushner both on tape admitting to bribery. King never admitted a damn thing and he beat all charges.

Promoters, match makers, etc are the roots of the problems with boxing though, and I just cannot like any of them. I have more trust in fighters who turn promotors than others because the fighters know what it is like and empathize with fellow fighters, in theory at least.

The two biggest problems in boxing are promoters and sanctioning bodies. Get rid of both at the same time, get a boxing league going similar to an NBA or MLB and we'll have a huge start in the right direction.

Nice post. This is exactly what boxing needs but seemingly will never have. It would take an act of Congress or God to change this terrible system. But a league run like the other major sports or at least a hybrid would be a huge boon to boxing.
