Body alarm is for you only, or for other staff. So we don’t have to press our body alarm for an inmate in BOP. You just give directives to stop, call it on the radio, and wait for backup. If an inmate is defenseless and still being attacked, to prevent loss of life, you can use lethal force. But ain’t no CO gonna do that when they’re outnumbered 10 to 1. In fact, most staff would tell you just stay back until more staff arrives. Even the Captain would tell you this.
So no, no buttons have to be pressed. But you do have to call it over the radio. If you don’t, well, you’re going against policy and probably won’t be backed by BOP, lose in court, and pay part of your check to the inmate’s family for the rest of your life.
Inmates nowadays are more protected than you think. Those cameras are for their safety, not mine. When I save an inmate hanging himself, you don’t hear that sh/t in the news. When there’s a use of force and an inmate gets hurt, you will hear about that.
