Canelo used to step back/reset/look after his combos. He’s improved on that, but there’s still hints of it. He’s never going to throw 70-100 punches in around even if he’s way behind. He threw a long looping right to Bivol’s arm all night. Yeah Bivol’s arm was red and swollen after the fight but he never stopped throwing it. The pace was more than Nelo was use to. He had to resort to backing to the ropes and bob and weave with his hands down. Don’t get me wrong he’s a great defensive fighter now. Bivol would throw a combo and then Canelo would step back and relax but then Bivol would add on another punch or two that would land. Canelo was backing against the ropes by the end of the last round, he wasn’t as fresh as Bivol.
Canelo doesn’t carry the same power up at 175lbs and that makes sense. My prefight prediction was that the fight would be very close, no KD’s, no ko, but Canelo would win due to his stroke if he deserved it or not. In some ways they tried.
You can say boxing is life, demand all the respect in the world for yourself and pretend that you are classy. Still if you challenge for someone else’s title and then demand to come in the ring second cause you are the A side that’s a lack of respect for boxing period. That’s ego over history and precedent. It’s a lack of respect, classless, ego driven. I know it rubs even the biggest Canelo fan the wrong way.
