In this watered down world, I am a true believe in the old school world champions. Ring Magzine style: The Original Eight Weight Classes. I started doing this in 1983 and have a lineage of the eight classes and champions of each since then.
Very simple rules. The world champion must defend against a legitimate top 10 contender every 12 months or become stripped of the title. Title fights don't have to be 12 rounds or be contested for one of the alphabet titles. As long as weight is made, 10 rounds is fine. Two examples: Barry McGuigan W 10 over Juan Laporte on 2/23/85. Both fighters made weight and this was for the "Vacant World Featherweight Title". Champion Esubio Pedroza was stripped of the title by me for inactivity. Mcguigan defeated Pedroza in June of '85 for the official title.
Another rule is that a vacant title can only be contested by two fighters in the top 5 of a division. This is where McGuigan and Laporte qualified at the time.
Another current champion I have listed is Manny Pacquiao. He doesn't hold any alphabet titles but is the World Champ at 126 right now. If his upcoming fight with Morales is at weight it will count as a title defense. If not he will probably be stipped due to inactivity.
In 1983 I initially called my rating the International Boxing Commission. Long before there ever was an IBC.
Coming up the current champs....
