It's good that he realizes it's time before something really bad happens to him. I hope that he's good for money and ready for the next phase of his life.
Is desire a better word than heart? Not sure. But he has fallen so far from where he was, and so fast that it must be tremendously difficult to stay motivated and also in such a situation, you must realise that if you get KO'd by a boxer on Mendoza's level then no matter how hard you work it's not likely you're going to get back to be a champ and get thos motivating paydays.
He was a star that shone exceptionally brighly for a very short time, a shooting star if you will, as opposed to other stars that are dimmer but stay lit for eons - Chisora, Lundy, Pulev,
On top of the many boxers from the black/white, no footage era having lost to even worse fighters than Mendoza and still creating legendary careers; in recent years we had a fighter like Manny Pacquiao lose to Rustico Torrecampo and still come back to make it not only become a future first ballot HOFer but also highly regarded as one of the greatest boxers to ever live.
He struck gold b/c JRock is a bit chinny (even Ishe buckled him) even though a good technical boxer. Then it was real fights after that. Another Dominican bites the dust.
Being knocked out in his last 3 fights it's probably a good call to stop boxing. Who knows if he's healthy. Taking brutal shots vs all 3 I'm sure took its toll.
Banana!! He's one of my low-key favorites; just enjoyed watching him box. I'd prefer he stick to his word, but this is an emotional response less than 24 hours after the fight. If he truly is done, he has a career to be proud of. If he doesn't, maybe he can have a rematch with Julian Williams, who was reduced to an 8-round fight last night. Either way, it is your call, Banana- and I hope you help with the development of upcoming boxers.
This guy knows he has peaked. It's all down from here. Like when Prince Naseem retired after Barrera took him through school and college, knowing, that if he fights the real elites, he has nothing but another 6-7-8 losses coming. Prince retired early, healthy, and can now look back on his wins over the likes of Billy Hardy. Cash in

well you made me look up Torrecampo on boxrec - irrelevant analogy. It was the second year of Pac's career, he hadn't been a champion by then, you see top boxers lose fights before they even hit prospect stage all the time. Rosario was a double belt champion and has fallen a long way different story.
As for going back generations, different era. Different matchmaking back then and also much lower purses so unlike Rosario, who is hopefully worth a million at least, those guys back then were motivated to carry on fighting to make a living
