He did beat them, but not when it really mattered.

He beat Popkins at his peak. When Popkins was younger, he was not nearly as smart. The fight would have been extremely one-sided, ending in brutal fashion with Popkins being knocked out of the ring.

And let's not even talk about Roy, because it's just too degrading to talk about someone who got the worst beating of his life.
