Some do it if the opponent doesn't pose a threat. Might as well play around if the other person doesn't belong in there with them

Well... yes. Many boxers will fight hands down at times and a few boxers are known for it being a feature of their style - Maravilla and Hamed have been mentioned already - but even they would get their hands up when under attack if their feet and reflexes couldn't get them out of harms way.
