We all know Marquez and Pacquiao are different fighters. The point is that Marquez was smaller than Pacquiao, yet was able to outbox him using his counter-punching skills... The same skills that Mayweather excels at, and at a much higher level than JMM. Add on a reach advantage, speed advantage, and size advantage... Pac's chances start to get awfully slim.

According to Roach, Pacquiao was "multi-dimensional" in the Morales fight. He said he improved Pacquiao into a two handed fighter after being labeled one-dimensional in the first fight with JMM. In the rematch with JMM, Pacquiao was supposed to KO Marquez since he was "so much more improved" even since the Morales fights. Clearly, Pacquiao is the same fighter as he was, or at least similar enough that his "improvements" are meaningless against the elite, which is why JMM out-boxed him in the rematch just as he did in the first fight!

    • The reach advantage is phenomenal. Watch the first gif thing and you can see that Marquez' jab distance doesn't reach Mayweather face because he pulls back but then he throws that right hand from the same spot and it reaches Marquez' face with room to spare. That's what having an entire boxing gloves worth of extra reach can do for you. A brilliant genetic gift.

No, I'm not bringing the skill factor into it. Mayweather even with the same reach would still beat Marquez at 147. He just cannot fight that high. That's why there is weight divisions. They matter.

      • floyd was up to 160 vs jmm and pac 148, thats why jmm's punches were useless vs a middleweight floyd.

        • well mayweather didn't dominate dela hoya and had a hard time finishing ricky hatton.

pacquiao fought those two with ease. he didn't even got punched!!!!

Marquez was the smaller man against Pacquiao, which is why he couldn't knock him down. However, he did hurt Pacquiao several times and bust him up.

The blueprint that Marquez set to beat Pacquiao uses the same tools that Mayweather excels at at a much higher skill level. Floyd, using his reach advantage and his incredibly fast jab, will toy with Pac finish him off any time he wants. This fight is a mismatch!
wrong. jmm wasnt able to counter floyd cause floyd throws one punch at a time then backpedals. what a shame given that hes the bigger guy yet doesnt want to exchange

            • Dont you get slower as you get older and move up in weight? Are they any clips on Manny having Marquez miss or am I suppose to believe that Marquez hit him with every single shot he threw? Marquez was faster then and Manny was looking to trade shots. Against De La Hoya, Pacman was more precautious in the beginning.

That's because Oscar was 145 and weight drained and Hatton was already ruined by Money Mayweather, all according to Freddie Roach himself!

The entire premise of your thread fails. JMM's counter-punching was useless against Floyd because he was forced to be offensive the whole fight and was essentially a fish out of water. There was nothing for Marquez to counter.

The reason Floyd never tried to finish Marquez was because he didnt want to go on the offensive and let Marquez catch rythm all of a sudden and put him in a position to do what he does best.
