For Mexicans boxing is more than just a sport, it's not like rooting for your favourite sport ball team. I'm saying this because even despite me not being Mexican, but as a fight fan I won't just blindly support someone because he has the same flag as me.
Boxing is an individuals sport, some fighters hold themselves better than others and make a country get behind them better than others. I would argue Canelo has done plenty to make many fans not so fond of him similar to how AJ and Fury get on the wrong side of people.
Like who you want to like, you don't have to root on the basis of skin colour for a start that's a really pathetic motive to be invested in a fight. Don't need to root for a guy from the same country as you, it can just be as simple as liking someone. Pacquiao did it better than anyone else and GGG to a degree did it good with winning fans over. The promotion behind fighters can really do a lot to help get fighters over, but nobody can do that more than the actual fighter can.
