Comments Thread For: Esparza: No Longer Women's Boxing; It's Women Boxing And With Respect

Marlen Esparza finds herself in the only title fight on a show for her second straight ring appearance. Four months after scoring her biggest win to date on a card headlined by Ryan Garcia, Houston's Esparza aims to steal the show from local hero Vergil Ortiz Jr. this Saturday at ****ies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. The reigning lineal/WBA/WBC flyweight champion defends against mandatory challenger Eva Guzman (19-1-1, 11KOs) on a DAZN card where every other participant is male but whose credentials pale in comparison to what Esparza has been able to achieve on both the pro and amateur stage.

Yeah, it's funny how much more easily those credentials can be attained when the talent pool in your sport is so pitifully shallow, isn't it?

All Olympic medals and world titles are not made equal - far from it when we're comparing men's boxing with women's - and to imply otherwise is highly disingenuous to say the least.

If Esparza was male she would be a journeyman at best working the club circuit in four rounders, so please don't pretend being a woman has held her back when it's actually the one thing that's allowed her to have some notable success in the sport at all.

Full respect to the women fighters but 'we see little girls in the gym sparking little boys in sparring, people don't even get surprised anymore' sounds a bit much.

Probably not a great idea for small children to be going at it full on in sparring and knocking each other out, especially not if it's male vs female. Seems like the male wins that most of the time.

Well said. It’s like comparing oranges to apples. The flyweight division in men’s boxing at the moment is also much deeper than it is for women’s boxing.

womens boxing is boring and the talent pool is super shallow. it means very little to be a women's champion you can be incredibly mediocre and still rise to champion

I've seen women who hold titles that are sloppy, slow, uncoordinated, and who look like crap amateurs at best, yet that hold a "world" title. There are so few who clearly have talent. Very few fights are exciting and skillful. The worst are usually at the bottom of some undercard on ESPN or DAZN.

”[Esparza’s] lone defeat—a hard-fought, technical decision defeat to bitter rival Seniesa Estrada in November 2019”? Yes, it was “hard fought,” but it was also a one-sided, dominating performance by Seniesa Estrada.
