Comments Thread For: Can Danny Garcia Make a Closing Statement at 154?

By Cliff Rold - It's been almost nine years since Danny Garcia defeated Lucas Matthysse in what might have been his finest hour. When it was over, there was no argument. Garcia was the best Jr. welterweight in the world and then... It could feel like Garcia has been chasing that night ever since, but the pace of his career makes that a hard case.

I like Danny and think he is a high caliber fighter but I just don’t see him making a big splash at 154.

Couldn't make a splash at 147 at 5'7, no power, and 68'' reach but he is going to challenge charlo and the contenders. here's how it works: charlo vacates at some point and moves up. garcia vs sadam ali (another 147 who cant compete at 154) for a vacant belt.

Danny Garcia has been overrated for most of his career. He won two questionable decisions against Herrera and Peterson where he was beaten up and in addition, he ducked both Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather and Terence Crawford in his career.

His most significant wins have come against gate keepers and washed up opponents who were well past their primes like the guy he is facing Saturday night in Jose Benavidez, Jr.

So the short answer is no. He won’t make a splash at 154 because he is past his prime now at the age of 34 years old.

He can maybe work his way to a title fight, no idea whether he will win.

It is his lack of elite level speed, and movement. Apart from that Garcia has power, and his quite tough.

12 fights in 9 years speaks volumes for Garcia's lack of ambition once he'd conquered 140. Not pushing for a Mayweather fight and his performances against the other top flight 147ers just reinforce those su****ions. A couple of cash out fights for Danny at 154 seems to be the preferred route as he barely has even a punchers chance against Charlo.

I just knew danny was gonna fight Floyd after he co main against Matthysse on the floyd/canelo card.

I still can't believe danny didn't cash that in.
