Comments Thread For: Mayer on Baumgardner Fight: 'Matchroom Tried To Get It On DAZN; Top Rank Said Hell No!'

Mikaela Mayer has always been confident about her promoter's confidence in her value. That is why the 32-year-old Southern California native and current unified (WBO, IBF) 130-pound titlist is not surprised that the biggest fight of her career will take place on a Top Rank-promoted, ESPN-broadcasted card (Sky in the United Kingdom).

Well done Top Rank and ESPN, well done. Looking forward to seeing the fight and the card. Nice to see Top Rank/ESPN bringing boxing to the American sports fan

Lesson that should be learned: Promoters should stop standing in the way of their fighters. IIRC Hearn said TR sent him an offer, to which he responded with his own. Hearn liked TR's counter-offer so much that Hearn let them have it. This is how it should be. Promoters negotiate in good faith, and fights get made.

However, I question how much value TR sees in Mayer or this match-up. Mayer/Baumgardner is gonna be a co-main in the UK.....this would've been the perfect time to put Mayer and Baumgardner's drawing power to the test by having them headline their own card on ESPN. Did TR also relinguish some of the financial responsibility by putting it on Sky?

EDIT: Hearn mentioning how the fight materialized: start at 50min mark

Really hate for Matchroom sending over a champion when Bob slated Womens boxing and only Eddies willingness to supply all of Mayers recent oppoents rather than freeze her out like the PBC with the 146's.

Seems to me Top Rank / ESPN should be thanking Matchroom particularly as they couldn't stage the fight and had to rely on Sky to sell it.

Wish all promoters would send their fighters over.

Mayer should be able show her class and dominate this fight. She’s a special fighter, I have her #2 p4p behind Katie.

Wowzers, what a card. Clarissa Shields vs Savannah Marshall is frankly X-Factor, and although Mayer vs Baumgardner is a fantastic fight, it is one that Mayer will almost certainly win by a wide points desision. Michaela is a very special fighter in my eyes.
