Sylvester Decisions Lorenzo To Capture The IBF Title

At the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany, Sebastian Sylvester (32-3, 15KOs) pulled out a twelve round split decision over Giovanni Lorenzo (27-2, 19KOs) to capture the vacant IBF middleweight title that Arthur Abraham had vacated. The scores were 116-112 Sylvester, 116-112 Lorenzo and 115-113 for Sylvester. Lorenzo had his moments but he was outboxed when it mattered and couldn't rally strong enough to turn the tide in the championship rounds. [details]

Awful scoring by Valerie Dorsett. I thought Sylvester won handily.

Hopefully Asikainen beats Macklin for the EBU title and gets the title shot Finland has been waiting for nearly 50 years (since Olli Mäki fought Davey Moore). I'm not too confident about Asikainen's chances at this point though.

I had Sylvester winning 117-112 I think. 9 rounds to 3. Bad scoring from the american judge.

I just googled the name "Valerie Dorsett" and "boxing"...

I see she's had controversial scores in other fights.

She's a terrible judge; I honestly don't know how she keeps getting prime assignments.

She somehow had Harry Joe Yorgey-Jason LeHoullier a draw last year in Nashville, having conveniently snuck away from the arena floor the moment the fight was over.

I only saw this fight in spots, not enough to score it. But from most accounts it sounded like Sylvester's win was well-earned. Obviously Lorenzo felt different; his take will be offered whenever my "post-fight" article is posted.

I'm happy for Sylvester, though. I've always liked him and was disappointed when he came up way short (figuratively and literally) against Sturm last year
