Comments Thread For: Fortuna's Promoter: We Wanted Higher Weight (140) Because We Only Had 7 Weeks

LOS ANGELES - This wasn't about Ryan Garcia gaining an advantage over a smaller fighter. Javier Fortuna's promoter informed BoxingScene.com on Thursday that it was actually their side that requested a higher weight limit for their 12-round fight Saturday night at ******.com Arena. Fortuna felt he didn't have enough time to get down to the 135-pound limit for a lightweight fight, therefore they agreed to box at the junior welterweight maximum of 140 pounds.

Staggering how much smaller Fortuna looks compared to Garcia during faceoffs.

Not a good excuse to ask for higher weights or complain about lack of time to make weight.

Boxing is a very tough sport, I couldn’t do it. When a coach told me what it takes, basically don’t work, don’t go to school, do nothing but boxing. You know what you are getting yourself into when you say “Yes, I will do it.” That means stay in shape 24/7, 365. Some of the greats, that’s
      what they did.

Like I said, I couldn’t do it, but if you are a pro boxer, not staying in shape all year, taking breaks and ballooning up in weight during breaks then crying about needing more time to get in shape is like a cop occasionally leaving his gun and cuffs at home when going off to work, then complain that he can’t stop any crimes or make any arrests.

It’s a huge sacrifice, not for everybody. For many, boxing is a way to make ends meet. Literally poor people turn to pro boxing for money, it’s all they know. It’s the only way they can make good income for their family.

Very tough, but you if you’re gonna do it, you’re a pro, you’re consistently ranked in the top 10 by every boxing publication…then you should know there is no slacking.

I hate to judge to but it’s 110% truth. It’s an unforgiving sport. Gotta be 100% ready at all times.

Both agreed so no issues, probably benefits Ryan just as much as he's a big kid. Should be an exciting fight. Ryan starches Fortuna in empathic fashion and we get JoJo next.

Tf is the point in fighting Jojo next if cRyan beats Fortuna in emphatic fashion?

He isn't getting Haney,Tank,Cruz or loma next so who else is there? JoJo a good journeyman level fighter and he's with Golden boy so it's the easiest fight to make out there

Prefab excuses. Fortuna could make 126, but age or lack of discipline got him gate keeping. He doesn't have the size, speed, or power to keep Ryan off.

How pitiful of Ryan Garcia, he not only ducked a final eliminator vs. Javier Fortuna at the lightweight limit, but waited for Jo-Jo Diaz to beat him ; if that was not enough now Ryan is getting Fortuna in bad shape.

Javier will be gassed by three rounds, from that point it will be only a matter of time before the ref stops the fight.

Ryan by KO, I wasn't aware that Fortuna's fatass was going to come in above the 135 limit. I saw him and he looked out of shape and was wondering if he was even going to make the weight. That was his downfall extremely talented but his discipline led to him falling off the radar and missing out on the chance of becoming a 3 division champion. Joan Guzman 2.0
