  • Comments Thread For: Rahman Jr. Says Jake Paul 'Stacked The Deck' By Putting Rehydration Clause In Contract

NEW YORK - Hasim Rahman Jr. can weigh whatever he wants when he enters the ring to fight Jake Paul the night of August 6. That morning, however, former heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman's son cannot weigh more than 215 pounds. Rahman revealed during their press conference Tuesday at Madison Square Garden that Paul's team required him to agree to a rehydration clause that will allow Rahman to gain a maximum of 15 pounds between their official weigh-in the afternoon of August 5 and a second-day weigh-in the morning of August 6.

Rahman Jr. crying about the money, whining about the agreed weight, making excuses about losing his last fight. By the time the fight arrives, 90% of the people who would have been rooting for Rahman Jr. to beat Paul will have switched to rooting for Paul to beat Rahman and send him back to the relative obscurity he was in before this fight came along.

Rahman Jr can't get away from the fundamental fact that he agreed to whatever stipulations apply to the fight. If he was unhappy with them, the time to voice it was before he signed the contract. If it is indeed a stacked deck, then he is himself somewhat complicit by agreeing to an unfair contest in exhange for the money.

This is exactly what’s wrong with boxing and how it can never be considered a sport or followed by fair “rules”

The favourites get to stack the deck in any way they chose

Catchweights, rehydration clauses etc are a cancer to boxing

I feel this and see where it's coming from,
but this is different from most of boxing.
Jake Paul doesn't have a legit career yet.
So this is all sideshow and fun until proven otherwise.
It might be a fun sideshow,
                but it remains sideshow nonetheless.

Fair point. But pisses me off nonetheless.

and I’d agree with you fully if it weren’t for the fact that it happens more often in actual professional boxing
