Comments Thread For: Team Beterbiev Questions Joe Smith's Mental Fortitude After Surprising Confession

John Scully could not believe what he had just heard. The veteran trainer and former light heavyweight contender was watching the first episode of Blood, Sweat, and Tears, a piece of ESPN shoulder programming to promote the light heavyweight unification between Artur Beterbiev and Joe Smith Jr., when Smith uttered words unconscionable for a seemingly hardened prizefighter.

They’re reading too much into it. Didn’t Ali almost quit a couple times? That didn’t help Foreman.

Now I don’t think this matters. I think Beterbiev is going to win with or without Smith Jr coming out and saying this.

This is something you talk about after your career

Revealing this gives Artur his opponent more motivation. Artur will believe now he's breakable down the stretch

Ali admitted to almost quitting against Frazier, but Frazier quit first.

I like his honesty and in the end he got on his feet and won.

Still think Artur will win though.

I mean he had a broken jaw early against Barrera and hung in there, I know Barrera is no Beterbiev but that still takes some type of will. This fight is 60-40 to me in favor of Artur they both looked in great shape I just hope it lasts at least 6 rounds and Joe can shock the world. In a way though I'd rather see Beterbiev vs Bivol over the rematch of Smith and Bivol so either way it's a win win as I'm a fan of both.

            Exactly.

I noticed this quote from Smith too and asked myself if he really just said that in front of a camera before getting I. The ring against Beterbiev. Now, it's not a given that this is truly a sign of weakness and maybe Beterbiev is reading too much into it, but if it gives Beterbiev a slight edge than it was a mistake for Smith to say it.

So Canelo got whupped real good by BIVOL. He certainly don’t need that again. Canelo the GREAT SHOULD FIGHT David Benavidez next not GGG. After Canelo gets the hell beat out of him and Knocked out in round 11 or his corner throws in the towel earlier he then should fight BETERBIEV and get beat down and KO’d real good

              THEN
              fight GGG
oh wait ,,,, after that he should fight USYK

I was very surprised when I heard Joe Smith state that, not the type of vulnerability you want to show before fighting Beterbiev.

I think this goes thru most fighters mind during a grueling fight, but none ever actually do it (except for victor Ortiz). Was it a mistake to say it out loud? Yes…is Artur team making too much of it? Yes.

btw, just placed a $200 bet on Smith to win via KO rounds 7-12. +1600 odds. Odds are to good to pass up.
