Comments Thread For: Joe Smith Was 'Shocked' Canelo Chose To Fight Bivol; Believed Bivol Would Win

Joe Smith Jr. knew Canelo Alvarez made a matchmaking mistake when he opted to fight Dmitry Bivol. Smith understands as well as anyone in boxing just how difficult it is to beat Bivol. The smart, skillful Russian thoroughly out-boxed Smith in their 12-round fight for Bivol's WBA light heavyweight title three years ago and employs just the type of troublesome style Smith immediately realized Alvarez should've avoided.

I’ve watched that fight a couple of times since it happened, really enjoyed seeing what Bivol did to Canelo…..and loved that they couldn’t rob the lad of a well deserved and DOMINANT victory. There has always been a blueprint on how to beat Canelo.

oh but they really tried. Still can’t believe that the fight was on the table going into the 12th. Smith said it right here by calling it a match making mistake. They thought Bivol would be easier based on his last 2 performances. If they knew he was capable of what he did, they would’ve went a different route for sure.

Lol there’s always been a “blueprint” to beat Canelo. Yeah be a 6’2 super skilled big 175er with an incredible jab. Dude tried to be great and finally but off more than he could chew. No shame in that but keep idolizing your favorite boxer who won’t even fight another top 5 fighter in his own division.

That's why I gave Canelo a lot of credit, because he took in a very difficult opponent.

More difficult than Charlo and perhaps stylistically tougher than Benavidez, who is obviously a fine fighter too.

With Beterbiev, there's more danger in terms of the incoming power, but with Bivol he's more difficult to figure out.

So we can criticise Canelo as many do now and then, but you can't say he doesn't take on tough challenges from time to time.

As for what Smith said, agree with some but not all of that, because Canelo's other opponents Callum, Saunders and Plant were not aggressive. Even Kovalev was boxing from the outside, and quite timidly that time too.

You have to understand the current global politics also

Nobody thought a Russian would get a decision in the US

Look at Petr Yan. They robbed him in ufc

He faced all that chit and slapped canelo up while taking 0 clean headshots. They couldn't take it from him
