Comments Thread For: Hearn Backs Cordina as Best Bet To Shock Stevenson at 130-Pounds

Eddie Hearn believes his charge, newly crowned titlist Joe Cordina, is the best bet in the 130-pound weight class to upset the division's kingpin, Shakur Stevenson. Cordina, the 30-year-old Welsh native, is coming off a one-punch knockout of Kenichi Ogawa to win Ogawa's IBF junior lightweight title earlier this month at Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales.

Why not try to make The GBP and Matchroom unification first and then go after Shakur seems like the fight wild easily be made since both are on the dayzin app. Much easier then trying to make a fight with no buzz where the promoters are signed to two different networks and apps

I like Cordina but no. Stevenson is levels above him.

Ideally, I think they would. But Cordina has a mandatory to deal with (who agreed to step aside for the Ogawa fight). Also, perhaps best another fight for Joe in Cardiff before a mega fight at the Principality. I wonder if Shakur would be tempted to fight in the UK for the unique prospect of filling a massive indoor stadium?

Great KO but before that he had some shaky performances where folks were wondering if he was truly going to reach the top level. Shakur is just levelllllssss above him and will make it look easy. No one at 130 is going to challenge him. He needs to hurry up and move up to 135 before those guys move up to 140. That's where we will see just how great he is.

Yeah I can’t see anybody beating Shakur from 130-135. Loma is the only guy I give a chance tbh.

He may well do. He hasn't said it's got to be Shakur next. He was asked about Shakur, and for obvious reasons, that he is the best in the division. Nobody asked him about Gutierrez lol. That's fairly obvious also.

Reason why I ask is that it was mentioned in this article and I think it’s a savvy point. Cordina is totally unknown in the usa, would help his position and bargaining power as a unified champion just as it raised Josh Taylor’s. Of what good is it to be on the same platform if fights cannot or will not be made is my thinking

Yeah your right, it was mentioned, but Hearn hasn't been getting asked that question. Neither has Cordina either. It's all about Shakur. But, that Hearn suggests it could be an undisputed fight, might be an indication that he sees Joe unifying first, and then Shakur. As you say, it's the most obvious way, and I'd want to see it go that way also, personally. But they both have mandatories first. Joe against Rakhimov, and Gutierrez against Hector Garcia. So I'd expect them next. And I don't know if it's true, and perhaps you may have some intel to share, but I heard that Shakur may be fighting Navarette. Any Truth?

You know I’ve heard that as well through fight casts. I RATELY do the YouTube channels anymore as most have grown uninteresting but I do recall hearing that mentioned. I’m hoping he moves up if I’m honest
