You are right he had his country backing him but a side from the brits everyone else pick klitscho they just thought it be a very close fight for him .

In hindsight Haye vs Wlad went exactly to form, there wasn't any surprises based on their styles, Wlad timidly jabbing and staying out of range, Haye timidly pot shotting and staying out of range.
