How Much More Nervous is Mayweather than Marquez On Fight Night?

Fight Predictions: Mayweather vs. Marquez by Abe Luciano
    Friday, September 18, 2009

Boxing Picks: Mayweather vs. Marquez Fight Preview: This is the biggest fight of the year, as everyone is anxious to see what undefeated champion, Floyd Mayweather will be like after such a long time away from the ring. Not to mention the fact that he won’t be fighting just any chump.

Juan Manuel Marquez is without question a legitimate, dangerous and capable opponent to take on a guy like Money Mayweather. It’s going to be interesting to see what kind of gameplan Mayweather’s camp will employ for this mega-bout. Will he run a marathon like he did against the “Golden Boy” or will he come out to brawl? I think most know the answer to that!

Nevertheless, according to Boxing Picks experts at SportsBook, Floyd Mayweather [-350 ML] will enter the ring Saturday night as the sports betting odds favorite to make a successful return by defeating betting underdog threat, Juan Manuel Marquez [+275 ML].

Boxing Picks specialists are also anticipating this fight to go the distance. At the time of this Fight Preview, the OVER/UNDER for Mayweather-Marquez was set at a total of 11½ rounds, with the odds makers favoring the OVER. But have you ever wondered what’s like in the days leading up to a huge fight like this one, how much more nervous is Mayweather than Marquez on fight night?

Certainly, if there’s a guy that knows what’s like to be in the spotlight, and has handled the pressure of fights all his life, that’s Oscar Del La Hoya! Remember him, that's the guy that actually BEAT Mayweather and got robbed! In his blog this week, the Olympic gold medalist described what it’s like from the moment camp is closed, up the opening bell and beyond.

Here’s just a little taste of that (excerpts from Oscar De La Hoya blog: Fight week):

Once you get to Vegas, the butterflies get bigger and bigger. That’s when both the nerves and adrenaline start to kick in. Then, at a certain point, you start to get anxious. You start feeling moody and your attitude changes. Everything bothers you –- the fact you have to make weight, can’t eat the same, have to shed that last few pounds…

Once you get to the last few hours before you go into the ring, once everything winds down, then it just becomes a blur. Everything happens so fast. You hear, “You have 10 minutes to go out to the ring.” Then you’re in the ring. Then you’re fighting. Then it’s over. It becomes a blur. You don’t think about it. You don’t think about anything except getting into the ring and fighting?

I can't imagine how nerve wracking and probably exciting it would be in the build up to a massive fight in front of a huge crowd but wait....did that article say DLH beat Floyd?

With all due respect to Oscar, that is the difference between Oscar and many other fighters who are more self-aware.

I believe Oscar when he says that it is a blur. But I know for a fact that some other guys are MUCH more relaxed, aware of their surroundings, etc.

For example, Calzaghe, Jones, Hopkins, Whitaker, Mayweather, etc all know what is going on inside and outside of the ring. They feel the ebbs and flows of the fight. The rounds don't rush by. They bide their time. They talk to the commentators, showboat, taunt the crowd, etc. That is why those guys win the big fights, and guys like Oscar don't.

I remember Shane describing what happened vs Forrest. He said that Forrest caught him with a punch that hurt. He went to the ropes, and then he got hit with the upper cut. Shane said he remembered seeing the lights, and everything was in slow-motion as he went down. SM then said that he was buzzed for the next few rounds, and time and rounds were just going by. He doesn't remember any of it. Before he knew it, the fight was over.

I found this interview fascinating. it was the roundtable for the vargas fight, and you guys should try to find it on YT. It goes to show how much they fight on instinct. SM has been boxing since he was a little child, so even when he wasn't aware of what was going on, he was just out there goingthrough the motions.

it made me wonder how often that happens. A guy is buzzed, not visibly hurt, but the whole plan or any ring intelligence goes out the window... and he just can't do anything in there.
