Comments Thread For: Sergey Kovalev On 2 1/2 Year Layoff: Of Course I'm Worried About Ring Rust

Former light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev's return to the ring could be worrisome. The 39-year-old has not fought since a Nov. 2019 knockout loss to Canelo Alvarez. The following years and months have not been so kind to him either.

I'm his prime he was a real force.

By the time he fought Canelo, he was spent. I was quite surprised that in that fight he was very timid. I knew that fight was not the 'krusher' Sergey.

His chin isn't good, and one wonders why he would fight on after the Canelo payday. Then again, the cruiserweight division is one of the weakest divisions in boxing.

Ward exposed the myth of "Krusher".

The steroids and woman bashing are not a good look either.

This is a good point. Article saying he's fighting on, in part, to live more comfortably, but obviously got £11m after facing Canelo.... so wtf is he spending his money on?!

Pulev has fought twice in 3 years, is 40 years old, whos best win is Valery Brudov in 2018 ffs. Kovalev is clearly shot but he should be KOing Pulev surely?!

Canelo picked Kovalev just like he did to Smith. He knew they were having trouble making weight, and the effects of that were showing in their previous fight(s). They both had no more fights left at that weight but if Canelo offers you enough, you drain yourself and take the payday.
