everyone should be sore joe took on a washed up shell of a fighter instead of a worthy oponent and just messed around for 12 rounds. i was disgusted when i heard the fight was made and i felt even worse seing joe taunt a shell of a fighter. imagine if berbick taunted ali, or joppy duran. everyone should be sore after that fight cuz thats the type of stuff thats killing the sport.

and bringing up race is just unnecessary. its not enough calzaghe is killing the sport fighting roy jones' corpse on ppv his fans has to kill this forum aswell.

yes, roy jones has been trash ever since he came down from HW. so joe accomplished nothing by beating him, anyone who doesnt think so is a moron. jones' last good win was over 5years ago ffs.

Firstly, you need to dry your eyes.

Now. Noone said the win over Jones meant anything. We all know Jones was way past his best (and Calzaghe too was past his best, being 37 and all). However, that fight wasn't about who was the best. It was a final big, 50:50 pay day and a show for boxing fans everywhere who had wanted to see that fight for the better part of a decade. Just so happened Calzaghe embarassed him when they finally got it on.

The way yo uare crying that Joe taunted him. LMFAO.

I thought it was GREAT of Joe to do that. Jones clowned on loads of fighters during his 'prime' years. Showboating, humiliating them and demeaning them. Yet when Calzaghe does it (and does it properly by sticking his chin RIGHT IN THE OPEN FOR JONES TO TRY AND HIT and cutting up Jones' face) it's not OK?

So it's ok for Jones to taunt fighters but Calzaghe can't do it to Jones?

Seriously, take YOUR TOUNGE AWAY FROM THE SALTY CRACK OF JONES.

And yes, Dirrell is a Typical US Hypejob like Lacy was. Lacy was 'The Next Tyson' and at least he was the IBF/IBO champ with some semi-decent names on his resume. The way he and the whole of the states were virtually swaggering, thinking they were going to KO Calzaghe in 6 and 'bring that belt home' and yet we got one of the biggest and most horrific one-sided beatdowns in the last 20 years of the sport. Calzaghe didn't just beat Lacy - he beat his critics, he beat the entire USA boxing community who claimed he was **** and a hypejob - he EXPOSED the real hypejob in DEVASTATING and SOUL DESTROYING fashion.

If Joe came back and beat Dirrell it would be a slightly better win than Lacy but not by much. I think Dirrell is a better boxer than Lacy ever was but let me say this - Lacy has a heart too big and a chin too solid for his own good. Dirrell perhaps has neither of those warrior attributes.

And anyway, why the **** should Joe take on tough opponent for his last bout? He'd been fighting for 2 decades and just wanted to retire with a good payday fighting a fight that should have happened many years ago. Like Lampley said - too fighters coming together, not for the money, not for the title - but for respect.

"and bringing up race is just unnecessary. its not enough calzaghe is killing the sport fighting roy jones' corpse on ppv his fans has to kill this forum aswell."

The reason I brought it up is like it or not - a lot of people that hate Calzaghe (such as yoruself) are black Americans who can't stand Calzaghe beat Hopkins (a far better version of Hopkins than Jones fought) and Jeff 'Tyson II' Lacy as well as just clowning (on the apparently now, not shot since his drubbing of Lacy) Jones. Not too mentioned all the semi-decent challangers such as Mitchell Calzaghe spanked down the years.

If Joe Calzaghe's speed is an illusion then he is a far better fighter than anyone, including his biggest fans, give him credit for.

Calzaghe won all his fights because of four key reasons:

          1. Hand speed - the best defences in the sport still can't account for blinding hand speed and let's face it, hand speed sometimes wins you credit for punches that don't cleanly land as well. Why do you think Leonard flurried against Hagler at the end of every round back in '87?

          2. Conditioning - Calzaghe always came into fights in brilliant condition, primed for twelve rounds and primed to work for every second of every round. In a close round, the guy who works the hardest usually takes it and I can't think of a fighter who ever outworked Calzaghe for a round.

          3. Chin - if you're going to have an 'offence equals defence' philosophy in the ring like Calzaghe had then you have to be able to take a shot. Calzaghe certainly could.

          4. Jab - an underrated ability of Calzaghe. Considering he couldn't put power into his punches in his later fights due to hand problems, his jab still had considerable pop and controlled fights when he used it sensibly. Against Kessler he was in a very tight fight until he turned his shoulder and boxed from the outside. Kessler couldn't find an answer for the jab-straight combinations Calzaghe threw. Against Hopkins, ugly though it was, Calzaghe only began to turn the fight around when he used his jab to lure Hopkins out of his shell. Jab, step back, flurry.

If Calzaghe's hand speed was an illusion then you better start hugging his nuts, because as far as I can tell, his hand speed was a key factor in making his as successful as he was.

If his speed was an illusion then I can't say how he performed his trickery because he did it too fast.

Also, I actually agree with the OP somewhat. Calzaghe's handspeed is overrated - he is faster than average but comeon - he's not nearly as fast as some have been in boxing. He just throws a lot and doesn't put so much power on his shots.

calzaghe was a solid fighter with a good chin however we all know bout his resume even after he beat Lacy and Kessler he was still fighting bums like Manfredo

to me calzaghe record means nothing other then that he was a protected fighter he used to tell Frank Warren he was scared of flying so as not to go oversees

come on he sc****d a victory over Bernard then beat a shell of a fighter that had lost 3 of his last 5 fights before that doesn't make him a legend in my book if he would've faced Dawson he would got beat so he did the smart thing and retired to go and do stuff like Strickly Come Dancing

Joe's strongest attribute as a fighter was handspeed. This actually compensates for his lack of fundamental technique. Foolish thread.
